This article contains the examples of the best international experience in stimulating of the regional (territorial) economic development, the positioning of the particular region (territory) at national and international level. The authors research on the basic principles and the theoretical approaches to the creation of the present regional development strategies. The successful practical applications of these principles and approaches are shown using the experience of Canada, The Republic of Ireland, Finland and China.
