The UK Referendum and Brexit Hypothesis (The Way Out Perspective and the Convenience to 'Remain United')

The BREXIT issue has to be seen in the context of a historic phase of the European Union, with the absence of common social policies. The EU is not able to take tough decisions in response to global events; migration, the fight against terrorism and interventions to tackle the winds of war in the Middle East and North Africa. The general necessity of cohesion and solidarity – to confirm the idea of a «free and united Europe», born in the aftermath of World War II – is inadequately responded to by the Member States showing an insufficient political responsibility in rising walls and refusing to deal with the humanitarian emergency. Countries with a high level of civilization cannot remain unconcerned to the cries of pain coming from people who reassert the right to have their dignity respected. The ambiguities of a difficult convergence with Turkey, which intends to require (on the basis of an exchange of its availability on accepting migrants) to play a greater role in the EU, in spite of its flawed process of democratization. The relationships between Member States of the Union are now contained in an intricate balance; and the skepticism to the Union's future follows from on its growing inability to communicate ideas based on values. This is why the Europe of people and nations of the last decades appears to be replaced by the one governed by technocracies and financial capitals.The Brexit discussion increases the feeling of uncertainty, highlighting the difficulty of identifying a way out from the impasse in which the EU currently seems to be stuck. The considerations on the ‘cost-benefit' analysis, on the base of which the UK seems to base its decision on remaining or not within the Union, underline that the relationships between European countries are now gradually taking place within a framework mainly characterized by financial issues (with limited possibilities to reflect and represent socio-political purposes). The future fate of Europe will be characterized not only by economic and financial relationships aimed at increasing the common market, but also the concrete realization of a political union dream, that remains segregated in an unreal wishful thinking
