Broadband Internet access cost (BIAC) 2014 : prices as of February 2014 : final report
This study monitors broadband prices in the EU28 and some non-EU countries (European: Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Turkey and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and non-European: Japan, Korea, Canada and three states of the USA: California, Colorado and New York). Pricing information of about 200 ISPs and 5,500 residential broadband offers (both standalone Internet and bundled with fixed telephony and/or television) is collected and compared. The report presents broadband prices in February 2014 in several manners: 1. Overall analysis of trends for the most popular speeds and product types; 2. Technical chapters with detailed description of methodology, sample composition and analysis of least expensive and median offers per speed basket and type of service. Key findings: Broadband prices in the EU28 have fallen significantly between 2009 and 2012, but have more or less stabilised since then; Price levels are still largely dispersed between EU Member States, but some convergence is taking place; 12-30 Mbps offers seem to offer the best value for money, offers with speeds over 100 Mbps remain in general very expensive; New entrants are most often providing the least expensive offers, which, however, are generally not available to all customers; The EU28 is the least expensive for 12-30 Mbps broadband, and the third least expensive for 30-100 Mbps broadband, after South Korea and Japan.
