3. Implementation of a community-engaged learning program: an institutional perspective

This chapter discusses the development of an institutional-level community-engaged learning (CEL) program, highlighting the critical roles of various stakeholder groups and educational frameworks that enhance learning outcomes and prepare students for global business challenges. Today's business schools are tasked with producing adept business professionals with practical experience in global, social, and ethical environments. This chapter explores how an institutionally supported CEL program allows students and faculty to apply abstract theory and concepts directly with businesses, non-profits, and community organizations through partnerships with community agencies, organizations, and businesses. Grounded in experiential learning theory, CEL is a learning process made up of concrete experiences, reflective observations, abstract conceptualizations, and active experimentation. The successful implementation of a community-engaged learning program requires the coordination of multiple stakeholders, including the university, college departments, faculty, students, and community partners.
