A Framework for Sustainable Consumption of Electronic Products

Product stewardship practices are gaining popularity as producers work to minimize global resource utilization and negative environmental impacts. Thus, there is increasing pressure on the personnel who are responsible for improving supply chain performance. In this paper, we propose and measure the effectiveness of mechanisms for sustainable consumption, that include extending products' lifespans and government imposed fee-upon-sale penalties. Specifically, we propose a conceptual model comprised of one producer, segmented consumers, and the policy-maker. The model conceptualizes the interaction among the three groups to slow consumption. Then, we propose a mathematical model based on the conceptualization to quantify the value of demand management through dynamic pricing on producer profitability and examine the mechanisms for setting government fees that are based on products' expected lifespans.
