Ageing – “Carpe diem” has no use‐by date

Purpose – Advances a positive view of ageing and the importance of planning a purposeful future. Findings – Argues the case for the introduction into the employment contract of a flexible retirement clause after an agreed period. Puts forward a five point WIIFM (what's in it for me?) index for comparing the options. Practical implications – Highlights the need for employees and employers to change their views of retirement, and make the most of the talent available, whatever its age. Originality/value – Fits the concept of “retirement” into the new regime of flexible and short‐term contracts.
