Blockchain Transaction Fee and Ethereum Merge

We study the determinants of transaction fees in Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchain. We find that the blockchain fee increases with the network congestion in a non-linear manner as hypothesized by Huberman, Leshno, and Moallemi (2019). Blockchain fee is also higher when the price of the associated cryptocurrency has shown a positive price momentum in the last three and six months. Finally, we find that the Ethereum’s transition to Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism caused the transaction fee to decrease for both Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains
