Board of Regents Report 1881-1882 Page 4
Several young ladies who have enjoyed the benefits of this institution are now pursuing the profession of teachers as a source of profit to enable them, not only to support themselves, but to contribute to the maintenance of friends at home. There has been no attempt made during the last two years to beautify the grounds, yet the native trees that were planted three years ago have lived and are quite thrifty, which give evidence that this kind of tree will flourish, though the frosts of May and June seldom fail to kill the Lombardy poplar tree. The buildings are in a fair state of preservation, but the University and dormitory need painting and repairing to keep them in good condition, and avoid the necessary expense of a general overhauling. The furniture of the former named building is in bad condition, and should be replaced by new and more convenient seats and desks. The philosophical apparatus is quite insufficient, and the appliances for successfully teaching chemistry are entirely inadequate. In order to assist in carrying out the provisions of an Act of the Legislature, entitled '-An Act authorizing a State loan," approved February 28, 1881, and the State Constitution, and by authority of Section 736 of the Compiled Laws, this Board, at a meeting held September 29, 1881, authorized the State Treasurer to make the following sales and investments, to-wit:First—To sell in open market, United States 4 per cent, bonds to the amount of $34,000, face value; said bonds now being in the University Fund, 90,000-Acre Tract, Security Account; from the proceeds of said sale, he will place the principal sum of $34,000 to the credit of said fund, and place the premium derived therefrom to the credit of the Interest Account, 90,000-Acre Grant.Second—From moneys in the Interest Account, 90,000-Acre Grant, he will purchase from bonds now in the University Fund, 90,000-Acre Tract, Security Account, United States 4 per cent, bonds to the amount of $9,000, face value, at par.Third—From moneys in the University Fund, 90,000-Acre Tract, he will purchase forty-nine (49) Nevada State bonds, 4 per cent., of the issue of 1881, of $1,000 each, par value, at par.Fourth—He will sell in open market, United States 4 per cent, bonds to the amount of $7,000, face value, from bonds now in the State University Fund, Security Account, and from the proceeds of said sale he will place the principal sum of $7,000 to the credit of said State University fund, and place the premium derived therefrom to the credit of the Contingent University Fund.Fifth—From moneys in the Contingent University Fund he will purchase from bonds now in the State University Fund, Security Account, United States 4 per cent, bonds to the amount of $6,000, face value, at par.Sixth—From moneys in the State University fund he will purchase fifteen (15) Nevada State 4 per cent, bonds of the issue of 1881, of $1,000 face value, at par.Under the foregoing authority, investments were made which leave the University Funds as shown in the following tabular statements :
