$1,650 78, out of the State General Fund. It was provided in the .Act that "if, for any cause, the said $15,349 22, or any part thereof, should not be used for the purposes aforesaid, the State Controller should transfer an equal sum from the General Fund, to be used for such purposes."Of the $5,600 appropriated, as above stated "from the interest to accrue from the University Fund,'' there was a surplus, which lapsed into the Treasury of $1,557. The whole of all other appropriations were expended. There are no deficiency bills against the State University of any kind. Of the expenditures made out of said appropriations, the sum of $2,917 11 was for procuring a supply of water at the University; the sum of $17,063 59 was for improve¬ ment of grounds and completion of buildings; the sum of $8,166 66 was salaries of Faculty; the sum of $552 28 was for the insurance of building; and the sum of $5,507 28 for contingent expenses, sup¬ plies, salary of Janitor, etc.The arrangement in regard to water supply is a contract for a term of years, at $400 per year, under which an abundant supply is obtained. The building is insured in responsible companies, and has been kept by the Janitor in good condition. The grounds have not' been materially improved, for want of funds.Soon after the closing of the University, in March, 1887, whep the Faculty then under employment was discharged the Board advertisid extensively for a President.
