In addition, 54 publi¬ cations were issued by the College of Agriculture.Some examples of direct benefit of agricultural research to the people of Nevada and other areas as well include:—Development of Lahontan alfalfa, resistant to spotted alfalfa aphid which previously had cost farmers throughout Nevada and the southwest millions of dollars in crop damage.—Development of a system of forage produc¬ tion on irrigated pasture which raised beef pro¬ duction from a normal 300 pounds per acre to 1,100 pounds per acre, thereby reducing invest¬ ment and labor in pasture development, and increasing the market value of cattle.Serving the needs of business and industry, the Bureau of Business and Economic Research, a division of the College of Business Administration, during the biennium has received two grants from the Small Business Administration—one to finance a survey of the advertising practices of retail busi¬ nesses within the state, the second to provide for a study of Nevada's economic and business resources.Both projects are actively under way, and their importance to the state is self-evident. The Bureau also has been actively engaged in making a cost- of-living study in Reno and Las Vegas and is mapping pedestrian flow in the downtown Reno area.In addition, the Bureau has rendered aid to the Department of Economic Development, extended proposals for the establishment of the Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada, forecast income from the tax sources of the state and acted as a consulting body for many state agencies.In the College of Arts and Science, the Depart¬ ment of History and Political Science serves the community and state agencies through its Bureau of Governmental Research, through such projects as the current cooperative study of Nevada munic¬ ipal administrative needs.At the present time, the Department of Journal¬ ism is compiling all Nevada laws relating in any way to the press. Individual staff members in psy¬ chology and sociology serve as counselors for a nonprofit marriage counseling service. The Department of Mathematics conducts an annual
