Chapter 1. Teaching information systems: history and current issues
Information systems education is rooted in the early days of computers when large corporations began using mainframe computers to process basic business transactions in the 1960s. A few pioneering business schools started offering computer classes focusing on technical skills such as programming. Over time the curriculum has expanded to include organizational, strategic, and social aspects of computing. This chapter reviews the evolution of IS education and offers an overview of issues critical to the effective teaching and learning of IS topics. The chapter also introduces other chapters in this book that discuss issues related to the curriculum, the learner, and the learning environment.
