Community Policing and Private Security Service in Nigeria : an Appraisal

AbstractThe impacts of violence unleashed by the Islamic sect popularly known as Boko Haram have become a nation-wide concern in Nigeria in recent years. Almost every day television stations broadcast, shows this trend, newspaper, magazine and internet websites run and re-run pictures of the attacks carried out by this cruel sect on the Nigerians citizens. The Nigeria government seems fragile in maintaining law and order. It is obvious that children of the affected parents are at the receiving end, as the government and all security agencies before 2016 lack the political will to bring them to book. The study adopted Historic- descriptive exposition methodology that anchored on secondary and primary data. The paper argued that Boko Haram insurgency posed threat on the youths and children, government officials, house of worship, security agencies, and schools. As such, government makes little effort to combat the threat. This paper explores the issue of Boko Haram historical legacy and impacts on lives of Nigerians, taking a depth look at factors that influenced this trend and their patterns of operation, the challenges posed by this trend against human security. This discourse summed up the recommendations towards resolving the threat posed by the sect to national peace and security of lives; to guarantee absolute basic fundamental human right.
