Country report non-discrimination : transposition and implementation at national level of Council Directives 2000/43 and 2000/78 : Malta [2025]

As of the end of 2023, the population of Malta was estimated to be 563 443, of whom 298 625 were male and 264 818 were female. Of the total population, 158 207 were foreign nationals. 1 According to the Labour Force Survey, the number of people employed during the third quarter of 2023 was estimated at 323 207, of whom 192 058 were male and 131 149 were female. 2 An increase in the number of foreign nationals living in Malta in recent years has been accompanied by an increase in the number of incidents of racial intolerance. At the end of December 2023,3 27 091 people with a disability were registered with the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability. According to a national census held in 2021, 4 the Census findings for the whole population (Maltese and non-Maltese) show that 82.6 % identify with Roman Catholicism, 3.9 % with Islam, 3.6 % with Christian Orthodoxy, and 1.4 % with Hinduism. The Church of England had 5 706 adherents, while 4 516 identified with Protestantism. 23 243 people declared not to have any religious affiliation, equating to 5.1 % of residents aged 15 and over.
