Creating New Ventures Through Entrepreneurial Orientation : Middle Line Managers Perspectives

In order to counter rivalry competition, organisations strives to employ different strategies that will give them edge so as to take advantage of the market leadership. It is against this perception that organisations adopt entrepreneurial orientation as a tool for overcoming their competitors and also expand their operational base. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and venture creation by middle line managers in Nigeria. Cross-sectional research design was adopted. Accessible population of this study covered forty small and medium enterprises operating in Enugu State, Nigeria while the sample frame includes one hundred and eighty middle line managers drawn from small and medium enterprises. Frequency distribution was used to analyse the demographic profiles of the participants. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to analyse the research hypotheses formulated. This study found that entrepreneurial orientation has positive significant relationship with venture creation. The study concludes that entrepreneurial orientation determinants measured in terms of perceived opportunities (PO); risk taking (RT); innovativeness (INV) and pro-activeness (PRA) engenders the creation of new ventures. The implication of this study is that owners of medium and small enterprises should encourage their managers to acquire the necessary entrepreneurial skills such as pro-activeness (PRA); risk taking (RT); innovativeness (INV) and perceived opportunities that will equip them to create new businesses outside the existing ones so as to provide more employment opportunities for the citizens that are ready and willing to work
