Crowdfunding : a competency framework for creators

What does it take for an individual to become a capable crowdfunder? To answer this question, I compare the crowdfunding process with the entrepreneurship process by taking the value creation perspective of entrepreneurship. Based on the similarities between these two processes, I draw on the literature on entrepreneurial competency, which is a stream of research devoted to answering the question: "What does it take for an individual to become a capable entrepreneur?", to develop a conceptual framework for project creators in crowdfunding platforms to become a capable crowdfunder. In this framework, eight competency areas are proposed: opportunity, strategic, organizing, conceptual, relational, ethical, digital and narrative competency. This framework theoretically informs the literature seeking an answer to the broader question: "Why are some entrepreneurs more successful than others in acquiring entrepreneurial resources through digital crowdfunding systems?".
