Gun Control and the Self-Defense Argument

A key issue in the debate over gun control is how it will affectthe relative incentives of criminals and law-abiding citizens to acquireguns. We propose a simple model of interaction of criminals and law-abiding citizens as a contest where the parties arm themselves in orderto improve their chances of having an upper hand in an encounter. Westudy the effect of various gun control policies on crime and the totaldemand for guns taking into account the strategic interdependencebetween the demand for guns between criminals and law-abiding citi-zens.[...]
