Immigration and the Labour Market

The recent inflow of foreign workers was similar to the one experienced in the early seventies, both as far as the quantity and the time span is concerned. The sharp increase in labour supply, particularly for manufacturing and service jobs of average and low qualification is reflected in a slowdown of overall productivity growth and contributed to a rise in unemployment.
