Increasing Entrepreneurial Capacity Through E-Learning: AnOpportunity For Small Construction Firms In South Wales.

The University of Glamorgan has been allocated European Union monies to assist in increasingthe entrepreneurial capacity of the region through a programme of work entitled EnterpriseCollege Wales (ECW). The programme currently consists of an on-line web based degree inEnterprise, aimed at creating business start-ups, new business ideas and business developmentand growth in areas where typically, activity has been deficient. This programme is designed toaid communities generate their own economic development solutions through the processesemployed by successful entrepreneurs and small business owners. This paper examines the roleof ECW in promoting entrepreneurship and development in areas of Wales and examines itsrelevance compared to the problems faced by small construction firms in the region. The paperbriefly outlines the history of the project and the role that education plays in promotingentrepreneurship in the region. It has been documented that small construction firms in SouthWales can benefit from programmes aimed at increasing their awareness of businessmanagement, marketing, financial management and ICT. The programme can provide thisopportunity both flexibly and supportively. It is concluded that the ECW programme mayprovide tangible opportunities for commercial development thus reducing some of the problemsfaced by small construction firms in South Wales.
