International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Africa : the Role of the Bretton Woods Institutions in the Economic Development of Africa
The relationship between the Bretton Woods institutions and Africa began in the 1980s as a result of the international debt crisis which affected the African continent negatively. The African continent approached the Bretton Woods institutions to salvage its economic situation. Consequently, the Bretton Woods institutions imposed certain conditions which the countries in Africa had to meet in order to to be given credit facilities. It has been argued that most of these conditions were detrimental to the African economy. Despite the criticisms advanced and challenges encountered in implementing these conditions, I argue that some of these conditions have improved the economic situation in Africa. Further, I also argue that the credit facilities issued to governments in Africa have alleviated countries in Africa from the economic effects of pandemics
