Job Satisfaction and Working Conditions in the Tourism Sector. Evidence from the Literature

Tourism is considered a highly relevant sector as a source of economic growth and job creation. This sector creates 330 million jobs worldwide, both direct and indirect (WTTC, 2020). However, many of the studies highlight the precarious working conditions in this industry, such as low wages, long working hours, atypical employment, and horizontal gender segregation. All these characteristics are considered in studies on job satisfaction in organizations in the sector; hence it plays a relevant role as satisfaction results from workers' perceptions of their working conditions.This work aims to conduct a literature review on job satisfaction and the working conditions analyzed in the studies reviewed, particularly in the hotel industry, on which most studies focus. The analysis is carried out from the point of view of sociodemographic characteristics of individuals, working conditions, and organizational factors. The methodology used is a systematic literature review using bibliographic databases and empirical research published during 1999-2019. This work contributes to understanding the scope of job satisfaction determinants and identifying which ones have been included in the different analyses and which ones have been excluded. This continues to be valid given that the working conditions in the tourism sector and, frequently, in the hotel industry continue to be questioned
