Labour Market Experience of Male Immigrantsand Ethnic Minorities in the UK

This paper examines the changes in the labour market experience of different immigrantand ethnic minority groups in the UK over time. The analysis suggests that, in early 90salthough there was no clear cut evidence of segregation in terms of employability, certaingroups of minority natives were found to be less represented in high-skilled professionaloccupations whereas some of the immigrants were in greater proportion in such jobs. Overtime, unemployment inequality has become significant among minority natives whereas theposition of immigrants in terms of employment status appeared to have improved. In recentyears, minority immigrants’ representation in superior occupations has reducedsignificantly, which is in contrast to the improvement of job market status of their nativecounterparts.
