Methane performance profiles for the EU regulation on methane emissions reduction in the energy sector : final report

The Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 on the reduction of methane emissions in the energy sector entered into force on August 4th 2024. The Regulation foresees the implementation by the European Commission of a methane transparency database as well as the annual publication of methane performance profiles for individual companies operating in the EU or importing/exporting fossil energy products into/to the EU, third countries exporting fossil energy products to the EU, and EU Member States. This study supports the implementation of the Regulation by 1) identifying and evaluating additional information sources as well as information elements pertinent to methane emissions reporting and abatement efforts, to be considered for use within the methane transparency database and/or directly in the methane performance profiles; and by 2) developing and testing templates for the methane performance profiles to serve as a basis for the final templates to be used by the European Commission.
