A national award for Outstanding service to the profession, and to the community by a Chartered Accountant, has been received by Notre Dame’s Professor of Accounting, Derek Parkin.Professor Parkin was formally recognised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) when he received the Meritorious Service Award, one of the highest forms of recognition from the ICAA.ICAA CEO, Graham Meyer explains, “short of life membership, it is the highest award we can bestow on members.” “There were only three such awards Australia-wide in 2010. The recipients’ dedication to the profession and their ongoing contributions to their own communities and society is commendable and an inspiration to us all.”The ICAA, established by Royal Charter in 1928, is one of the leading professional bodies in Australia. It represents over 65,000 members locally and is a foundation member of the Global Accounting Alliance, a coalition of the world’s premier accounting bodies, representing some 775,000 members internationally.The presentation to Professor Parkin was made by Mr Mel Ashton, ICAA Board member, during a private luncheon hosted by the ICAA. The event was attended by some of Western Australia’s most influential businessmen, together with leading members of the profession locally, representatives of the Business School and Professor Parkin’s family.Professor Parkin said he was humbled by the national recognition.“Although entirely unexpected, it is wonderful to be recognised for doing what one really enjoys,” he said.Professor Parkin is a Fellow of the ICAA.
