- 7 -2.3 Business-to-Business E-CommerceBusiness-to-Business (B2B) houses the greatest potential of commercial uses forthe WWW. The Internet is clearly an ideal medium for businesses to use for informationexchange. Historically electronic information exchange between organizations has beenvia Electronic Data Interchanges (EDI). These proprietary custom systems are not agileenough to operate efficiently in a changing environment nor do they offer interoperabilitywith other business applications. Hindering the transition away from EDI is the lack ofstandards supporting B2B over the Web. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML),commonly used for website design and definition of display properties, does not have theextensibility necessary to define business transactions, nor is it designed to supportsemantic data necessary to move forward towards the Semantic Web [1, p 6]. TheeXtensible Markup Language (XML) is capable of defining an expandable vocabularyfor use in a transaction, but a predetermined vocabulary such as the Universal BusinessLanguage (UBL) from OASIS is still required to establish an interchange . In theSemantic Web, standardized domain models will be pre-defined. Business exchanges willbe able to utilize translation services, allowing transactions and contracting to beautomated with software agents from different origins. Dynamic B2B exchanges amongcompanies from varying backgrounds who have never done business before will bepossible [13, p 2].2.4 WikisWikis, a product of Web 2.0, consist of web pages that permit users to postinformation directly to the site for others to view. Posting requires no special tools otherthan a standard Internet web-browser. Wikis breed collaboration and brainstorming at adistance, in addition to basic knowledge sharing due to their unrestricted nature. The
