Production and Marketing Trend of Cotton in Nepal : A Review Study
Cotton is an important cash crop playing a vital role in socio-economic development of the country. The main objectives of the study was to assess the production and marketing trend of cotton by analyzing the area, production, productivity, and trade from 2010-2019. The study used a secondary data published by government and non government agencies. Area and production showed some fluctuations between 2010 and 2019 but yield remain stable between the years. The import trend was decreasing throughout the period. Similarly, export experienced increasing trend in the initial years, however the trend decreased during the last periods. Cotton production in Nepal was hindered by production and marketing constraints. Lack of availability of quality seed, improved variety, fertilizers and labor were identified as the main constraints of cotton production in Nepal. Similarly, an ineffective marketing approach such as involvement of middlemen, inappropriate support prices and market price fluctuation were revealed as marketing constraints
