Prospects for renewable energy in the European Community and eastern Europe up to 2010 : Volume 1: Main report
The main objective of The European Renewable Energy Study (TERES) was to assess the longterm prospects for renewable energy sources in the Member States of the Community. In view of the changing relationships between the Community and countries of EE, the study also encompassed the latter, but in less detail than for the EC, due, in part, to the limited availability of data in EE. Using 1990 as the base year, the years 1995, 2000 and 2010 were originally specified as the reporting years, but because of the growing importance of CEC energy goals for 2005, particularly through the proposed ALTENER targets, this year was added as an additional marker year, and has been reported throughout. The study investigated and reports on: the situation with regard to the current technical performance of the various technologies; the costs of existing technologies at current prices; the prospects for developing the technologies; the foreseeable reduction in costs as a result of technical progress and mass production; the technical and economic potential of each technology; the possible penetration of technologies up to 2010 on the basis of four scenarios, using the forecasts of overall energy demand and of electricity demand set out in "Energy in Europe" : a view to the future; an analysis of the constraints on further penetration of renewable energy technologies (RETs), and policy and other actions to overcome these constraints.
