Providing an Informal Learning Teaching Guide to Parents and Volunteers of Barangay Fairview : A Polytechnic University of the Philippines Quezon City Branch Extension Project

In the Philippines, the Department of Education believes that to expand teaching opportunities, there is a need to proactively involve diverse stakeholders (LGUs, non-government and private groups) who can not only supplement school-level resources but also help manage them. Local government units (LGUs) at the barangay level assist national agencies in planning educational programs, initiatives, and services. Assisting parents in managing their children toward self-directed learning may help families and communities impart values. The ESK (edukasyon sa kalye) of Brgy. Fairview was redesigned to teach 'Home Economics for Kids', creating weekly lessons and teaching the children on weekends. The study investigated the effectiveness of the teaching guide used by ESK parents and volunteers that was participated by 191 parents from 15 sitios. To help parents and volunteers in Brgy. Fairview, the PUP Quezon City Branch developed a teaching guide for children to learn the fundamentals of personal hygiene, home gardening, health and nutrition, and money management. The use of teaching guide for parents in communities with limited access to internet and other available materials via online platforms can be a viable substitute to promote informal learning in facilitating the child's cognitive development
