SEZ has Clichéd the Growth of Weaver Productivity in the Bhadohi Hand-Made Carpets Industry

The paper intends to shed some light on the impact of structural reforms on the hand-made carpet (HMC) weaving industry in India. It presents the basic results of an empirical survey of a Special Economic Zone in India on the weaver productivity in the HMC weaving industry of Bhadohi. It is the leading centre of HMC exports from India. The survey data was collected by interview with a small Indian enterprises located in the Bhadohi Special Economic Zone.Weaver Productivity was operationalized by five involved characteristics – number of hours devoted to work, inches of carpet woven by the end of the day's work, technically known as the number of tapka as in the knots tied per square inches of the carpets; higher the number of tapka higher becomes the remuneration for the day, capability to design, migration for work. Two specifically designed questionnaires were asked to the respondents, both the employers and the weaverers, to rate their perception about HMC unit and the extent unto which the weavers' productivity is a share in the company's earnings. It is considered as inherent to Bhadohi in India, fairly a transition economy, the nature of enterprise is still hostile, dynamic and uncertain. The hypotheses outlined in the study were tested by using canonical correlation model. Weaver productivity is increasingly being shaped by business and institutional environment especially in a transition economy hence the study emphasizes the interrelation between institutional attributes and weaver productivity in Bhadohi SEZ. The actionable claim of the paper is that the institution like SEZ ought to conclude that the export orientation should be emphasized along with growth in weaver productivity. The research is a microcosm. It studies one unit to collect data and extrapolate results for the location as a whole
