Study on wireless charging technologies : final report
The Study reviews the current state of wireless charging technologies for mobile phones and similar portable consumer electronics compared to the state depicted by the Predecessor Study from 2021, with the following assumptions: - Qi has predominance on the mobile phone market; - Alternative approaches and technologies are still not present; - No remarkable competition exists amongst standards ; - There is a constant strive for development; - Technological limitations have not yet been resolved . The Study combines findings of desk research, literature review, a product database, expert interviews, and measurement experiments, to analyse market trends, technological advancements, and user experiences. Key findings reveal that while adoption of wireless charging in products is still small at present, there is a steady, ongoing market growth fueled by consumer electronics, particularly smartphones. While the Qi standard dominates mobile phones, other consumer electronics lag mostly due to form factor constraints and the use of proprietary solutions. Wireless charging still faces substantial barriers, such as reduced energy efficiency, interoperability, charging speed, increased alignment issues, and environmental sustainability. Despite advancements, expert consensus signals an early stage in wireless charging evolution. Due to the absence of a universal solution, notable innovation and considerations of standardisation exist; the latter will ultimately shape future trajectory.
