The ecosystem services they provide are crucial, including material and immaterial resources for human health and wellbeing, the socio-economic basis for industries and communities, as well as habitat for numerous species. However, forests and their multiple functions are under increasing pressures due to a changing climate, increased human activity and the associated land use changes.
