Technology - Metallurgy - Blast furnace operation without coke and carbon? The reduction of iron ores in the blast furnace process is done mainly by carbonmonoxid, which is produced by a chemical reaction of carbon and oxygen in front of the tuyeres of the blast furnace. The replacement of carbon by hydrogen as reductant is limited for process and plant technology reasons.
