This contribution presents the development of the Spanish economy during the economic period from 1996 to 2008 towards a production structure based on low productivity sectors not exposed to external competitiveness. The breaking out of the international financial crisis has demonstrated the deep weaknesses and the lack of balance of the Spanish capitalism, which will provoke that this crisis will last longer and will have greater consequences in Spain than in most of the other economies of the Euro area.
