In 1507, when the cartographerMartin Waldseemüller designed his famousworld map, he searched for a name for the Terra Nova(New World) and chose America, after the adventurerAmerigo Vespucci from Florence. That map is the birthcertificate of the United States of America. The onlysurviving original is displayed in the Library of Congressin Washington. A couple of months ago theseller revealed that the Library of Congress paid $10million for it, the highest price ever paid for a cartographicpiece of work.
