The Impact of Securitization on Bank Efficiency and the Mediating Role of Cost of Funding and Liquidity

We provide new insights regarding the impact of securitization on bank efficiency. Examining a sample of 983 US banks between 2010 and 2019, we find that securitization improves bank technical efficiency. Our results show that cost of funding and liquidity significantly mediate the relationship between securitization and technical efficiency, with liquidity having a stronger impact. We find that at least 17% of the effect of securitization on technical efficiency is mediated by cost of funding and liquidity simultaneously
