The Implication of Oil Discovery in Northern Nigeria and the Emerging Threats to Grapple With

This study tries to interrogate the unfolding skirmishes between Gombe and Bauchi States arising from competition for claim over ownership of the recently found oil endowed resources in the Kolmani area that cut across them. The article is situated within the context of Max Weber Conflict theory to understand the phenomena links between resource scarcities, intrastate conflicts, and the institutional prescriptions to manage them. The research methodology employed consists of content analysis of documents which are narrative in nature and secured substantially from secondary sources obtained from internets, newspapers, journals, and books. Also employed is qualitative method of analyzing contextual texts to unravel the contending issues associated with the discovery and extraction of oil. The conclusion proposes that so long as socio-economic inequities and weak governance structures exist, the availability of opportunities for groups to contest their grievances will always manifest. The recommendation proposes that multilateral approaches and initiatives using vital institutions in the attenuation, mediation, and mitigation of intrastate conflicts remain critical in tackling new intrastate fissures and regionalized conflicts
