The role of land pawning in securing loans : The case of Sangla in the Philippines
Sangla is a land-pawning contract in the Philippines in which the pawner temporarily transfers his cultivation rights to the pawnee in return for a loan and can redeen these rights on loan repayment. The author carried out field survey in some villages of Nueva Ecija, Lagan and Akan provinces to understand the phenomenon of Sangla. He attempts to elucidate the facts behind the emergence of Sangla and presents an alternative hypothesis about the process of choosing Sangla. (DÜI-Sen)
