Unfolding the innovation of meaning : a modified design thinking approach

This study advances the theoretical and practical understanding of meaning-driven innovation by proposing a modified design thinking (DT) framework grounded in hermeneutic principles. Unlike conventional DT approaches that prioritize user needs and problem-solving, this research reframes innovation as a process of envisioning strategic values, interpreting emerging socio-cultural meanings, and materializing symbolic and emotional resonance through design. Drawing on a case study from the Chinese technology sector, this research demonstrates how organizations can initiate radical meaning innovation by aligning internal vision with external networks and by structuring interpretations to navigate ambiguity and abstraction. The findings underscore the interpretive and socio-culturally embedded nature of innovation, providing a clear and actionable pathway for firms to reframe product meanings beyond utility and functionality. This work contributes to the growing discourse on meaning-centered innovation and extends the application of DT toward culturally sensitive and strategically guided innovation practices.
