Valuing Competencies in Networks by the Network Competence Report (NCR) : The Tecnomar Case

Purpose - This paper represents an initial proposal for a method to develop a network competence report (NCR) measuring the value of intangibles assets in terms of future earning potential of core competencies in a network founded on connections between independent firms. The model presented here attempts firstly to capture the value of core competencies within a single company and, subsequently, aggregate that information into a single ad hoc document concerning the whole network.Design/methodology/approach – Our method bridges the theories of intellectual capital and core competencies focusing on networks. This topic of research is completely unexplored, and we follow inductive approach based on action research methodology.Practical implications – Our method aims to provide an insight into the ownership of intangible assets components such as knowledge, collaborations and relationships in a network placing value on core competencies in monetary terms. Again, the NCR makes intangibles more transparent allowing companies to assess their strengths as a valuable tool for internal and external communication purposes. Furthermore, the pattern offers an insight into the management of intangible assets and their potential earnings in a statement, providing managers with a tool for continuity and qualitative growth in order to improve performance. Finally, the model could represent a tool to encourage governmental efforts in investing in strategically relevant industrial policies.Originality/value – To our knowledge, this paper represents the first attempt to provide an approach to evaluate, in monetary terms, the core competencies of a network into a single document
