Mutuals are a special legal form of insurance companies. This paper deals withtheir specific advantages and disadvantages compared to insurance stock corporations andwith a theoretical foundation of the lasting coexistence of both legal forms. The discussionleads to the empirically confirmed conclusion that insurance companies do choose that legalform which supports their firm strategy in the best possible way for given environmentalconditions.
