The generation of respiratory rhythms in birds
Granada, A.; Gabitto, M.; García, G.; Alliende, J.; … - In: Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications 371 (2006) 1, pp. 84-87
The generation of precise respiratory rhythms is vital for birds, which must generate specific pressure patterns to perform several activities, song being one of the most demanding ones. These rhythms emerge as the interaction between a peripheral system and a set of neural nuclei which control...

Subharmonics in the solutions of a model of the song motor nuclei in songbirds
Jercog, Pablo E.; Trevisan, M.A.; Mindlin, G.B. - In: Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications 356 (2005) 1, pp. 145-150
Songbirds produce their vocalizations by means of a vocal organ called syrinx. A relatively small number of parameters are cyclically changed in order to produce a song. These time-dependent parameters are generated by a set of hierarchically organized neural nuclei. In this work we use...

Nitrogen stars: morphogenesis of a liquid drop
Strier, D.E; Duarte, A.A; Ferrari, H; Mindlin, G.B - In: Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications 283 (2000) 1, pp. 261-266
We report a study of a symmetry-breaking instability which ocurrs during the free evaporation of liquid nitrogen placed on a concave container initially at room temperature. The system evolves spontaneously from a highly disordered boiling state to one characterized by sequence of well-defined...

Dynamical model to describe low-frequency fluctuations in semiconductor lasers with optical feedback
Mindlin, G.B.; Duarte, A.A; Giudici, M.; Green, C.; … - In: Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications 257 (1998) 1, pp. 547-556
We construct a dynamical model from experimental data obtained in a semiconductor laser system with optical feedback. We show that the low-frequency fluctuations arise from an inverse saddle node bifurcation and that the laser behaves as any other excitable system.
