CESifo Venice Summer Institute 2016: Workshop on "Political Economy Aspects of Income (Re-) Distribution"
The workshop will present research in the field of income (re-)distribution with a political economy focus. In recent years, a substantial amount of political and academic attention has been given to the topic of income (re-)distribution. Despite this broad attention, political economy dimensions have been addressed only to a limited extent. For instance, the interaction between democracy, inequality and (re-)distribution has not really been settled. Whereas Piketty assumes that inequality reduces the demand for redistribution, standard Meltzer-Richard models imply that greater inequality, as measured by the mean/median income ratio, will lead to increased taxes and thereby more redistribution. Also the level of trust in a society or the degree of ethnological fractionalization in a country might have an effect on the willingness to redistribute income amongst different groups within society. These are just two examples of topics that are relevant to this workshop. Any other research that links income (re-)distribution to political economy related aspects is welcomed.
