Poverty, Inequality, and Policy in Latin America
The aim of the symposium is to bring together leading scholars of Latin American economic affairs, researchers on the economics and politics of inequality, and researchers focusing on applied policy research to discuss these matters. Issues to be considered are: -The determinants of inequality (and its change) in Latin America over the past 40 years -The role of policy (e.g. macro, trade, infrastructure, human resource policies) in creating, sustaining or reducing inequality. -The political economy of redistribution. -The feasible policy options to affect inequality. -The role of history and initial conditions shaping inequality and the institutions sustaining it. -The role of particular markets (e.g. labor, land, and capital markets) in affecting inequality. -Methodologies for assessing the impact of policy on inequality.
