Investigating the Presence of a Transportation Environmental Kuznets Curve for India

India is one of the topmost polluters in the world, with a significant contribution from the transport sector. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of transport emissions environmental Kuznets curve for India, for the period 1990-2016. The standard unit-root tests, cubic OLS regression, granger causality tests, and ARDL bounds test for cointegration is employed and it is found that the typical inverted “U” shaped EKC does not hold for transport emissions in India, instead, an inverted “N” shaped EKC is found. We find long-run causality between transport emissions, energy consumption, and income. Implying a positive and upward-sloping relationship between transport emissions and income. The results necessitate the need to incorporate policies aiming for gradual decarbonization of the transport sector, and greater recognition of the emissions, energy consumption and GDP nexus within policymaking is also needed.
