Labor Market Discrimination and Suicidal Ideation Among Korean Women
This study investigates the effect of discrimination in the labor market on suicidal ideation among Korean women. Using the 7th wave of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Family (KLoWF) with 3,305 samples aged 20 and over, this paper tests the relationship between labor market discrimination and suicidal ideation among Korean women. Contrary to previous research that reports discrimination has a weak influence on suicidal ideation, the results show that women's discriminatory experiences in the labor market, including employment, dismissal, promotion, and wage discrimination, are significantly associated with suicidal thoughts even after controlling stress, depression, and prior suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that policy intervention to reduce labor market discrimination against women is essential to prevent the suicide of Korean women
