Ségrégation urbaine, logement et marchés du travail
[fre] Our purpose is to survey the main ideas of modern economic theory that can contribute to a better understanding of the segregation and unemployment problems arising within cities. We start by discussing the main contributions of urban economics and of labor economics that can used for our purpose. This is followed by a short discussion of the way economists deal with the phenomenon of discrimination. We then sketch what could become an economic theory of ghettos, which is based on the interactions between the labor markets and the market for housing as well as on various social externalities. We conclude by discussing some policy recommendations.
