Scientific Theories, Paradigms and Methods in Philosophy of Science
Scientific method theories and paradigms are some of the main questions explored in philosophy of science. Other issues that occupy the minds of scholars in this branch of philosophy include parameters for determining what qualifies as science, and the nature, purpose and reliability of science, among other overlapping issues of epistemological, metaphysical, and ontological dimensions. Some of the interrelated studies in this field include enquiries into the extent to which truth can be scientifically investigated and ascertained. Relevant questions in this area include: Can unobservable things be scientifically investigated, and to what extent is scientific reasoning justified? Are there realms of truth which are beyond scientific exploration? And to what extent are results from scientific experimentation of intrinsic philosophical value? Can criteria for philosophical enquiry be formulated and standardized and should such formulation serve as a way of gauging the objectivity and usefulness of all philosophical statements? The last question became the rallying theme of the logical positivists in the middle of the 20th century, and it was their concern with such questions that enriched discussions which ultimately led to the emergence of philosophy of science as a separate field of study
