Sources of Heterogeneity in the “Income Inequality – Subjective Well-Being” Literature : Sources of Inequality Data and Differences in between, within, and Pooled Country Effects
The literature investigating the relationship between income inequality and subjective well-being has produced heterogeneous results. Previous studies have found positive, negative, and no significant relationship between income inequality and subjective well-being. This study tests two potential sources of this heterogeneity: the level of analysis and the source of inequality data. The level of analysis; whether the analysis is between-country, within-country, or a pooled analysis of both within- and between-country effects; is found to have a substantive effect on the sign and significance of results. Within-country analysis, in eight out of ten cases, gives a lower estimate than between-country and pooled analysis. The use of different sources of inequality data leaves the sign and significance of results unchanged for between- and within-country analysis. However, it is found to have an impact on the size, sign, and significance of estimates for within-country analysis. Implications for future research are discussed
