Une estimation de la population de l'Inde en 1601
Moosvi Shireen. ? Estimating Indian Population, 1601. The present paper attempts at estimating the population of India ? 1600. First the existing estimates of population and the methods on which these are based have been examined. Moreland' estimate is based on the extent of cultivation in 1600, and Desai has made use of revenue statistics and comparaison of yields and consumption levels in ? 1600 with those of the 1960's. These methods though basically valid call for modifications and refinements of certain underlying assumptions. A fresh attempt is then made by adopting both methods, and the result is that a population of 145 millions is obtained for the whole of India (pre-1947 boundaries) for the year 1601. This establishes a compound rate of annual population growth of about 0,20% for the period 1601-1801; and this is compared with rates of growth calculated for European countries in the pre-industrial period.
