This book is a result of a symposium on the subject of "Management for Development" in Nairobi held in the Kenya Chapter of the Society for International Development in March 1985. The aim of the symposium was to discuss management in relation to development requirements, and not within a limited framework in which the targets are simple and straightforward - for example, profit maximization. Development is also a complex subject, especially when defined as broadly as it is in this book. These two observations may help to explain why the book covers such a wide range of topics
