Achievement in Basic Science and Technology as Correlates of Students Performance in Science in Senior Secondary Schools in Nigeria

This study sought to determine the relationship between students' achievement in BECE Basic Science and Technology (BST) and their performance in senior secondary science subjects. The study adopted correlational survey research design. The population for the study comprised all Senior Secondary School One (SSS1) that have written BECE Basic Science and Technology in 2017 and are currently offering biology, chemistry and physics as school subjects in all the public senior secondary schools in the study area for 2017/2018 academic session. Students' Achievement Inventory was used as instrument for data collection. Regression analysis was used to answer the research questions while Analysis of variance was used to test null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that despite low percentage variation in students' performance in science that can be attributed to their achievement in BECE Basic Science and Technology, there still exist significant relationship between science students' achievement in BECE Basic Science and Technology and their performance in science. The findings therefore imply that achievement in Basic Science and Technology is a major factor in science students' performance in science subjects at senior secondary level. It was recommended among others that placement of students into science classes at senior secondary level should be strictly based on their performance in BECE Basic Science and Technology and a well equip and functional counseling unit be established in secondary schools with a qualified counselor to help handle placement of students to field of study
